Kearney Dog Sleds Feb 6/7th 2010

What an amazing weekend!!   Kearney the BIGGEST LITTLE TOWN in Ontario hosted they Dog Sled Race.  There was plenty of activites for all ages with chidren's activites, ski-joring, ice bike racing and of course dog sled races.    This is the 16th year that Kearney has held this event and the races are normally 4, 6 and 40 miles but for the first time in 2010 together with the Ontario Federation of Sledding Sports they also held a 120 mile race.

The 12 dog teams left Kearney at 5pm on Saturday for the first leg of 60 miles travelling thru the beautiful hardwood bush and bogs bordering on the west side of Algonquin Park and returned to Kearney at approx. 10pm.  There was then a 4 hours layover where both the dogs and the mushers rested etc before starting off at 2am on another 60 miles, this time going  in the opposite direction.

This is something I will never forget seeing teams of dogs with their mushers passing the end of my driveway, the lead dogs with their little red lights on the peaks of their ears as a marker for the mushers, and the musher with their powerful light strapped on their heads.

I would like to thank all the Committee and the Volunteers who again put this event together.  More information about this event or interested in visiting the BIGGEST LITTLE TOWN OF ONTARIO
